What is UPS and why is it essential for all industries?

Loss of mains current and power swings occur everyday for various reasons and this often results in damaging sensitive machines and devices. The equipment which are crucial for every business to maintain their safety. UPS systems are considered the best tool to protect electrical equipment. In the following, Phazify experts will further introduce you to these essential tools.

What is UPS?

The word UPS originally stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply which means permanent power supply. In fact, by supplying the emergency power for electrical equipment during a power outage or power swings, this device protects them from any damage. By placing the UPS device in the electrical current and entering the consumers, it increases the quality of power input and eliminates any excessive noise. There is a battery in each UPS and its function is to save energy until it is needed to supply power to consumer. Maintaining the health and safety of the battery is one of the most important parts in guaranteeing the quality of UPS systems which can be achieved with the help of Phazify battery management systems.

Types of UPS

UPS systems are divided into three groups based on differences in design and function:

Online UPS

In this type of UPS, the inverter is always on and active and because of that the consuming power is supplied by the UPS and the saved energy in the battery is used to supply the consumer in case of a power outage. This function allows online UPS to have more protection of equipment in comparison to other types.

 Offline UPS

In this type of UPS, when the mains electricity has no problem and is in normal state, UPS is on rest mode and in other words does nothing. But as soon as the mains electricity goes out of normal state like in power swings, UPS is responsible to supply power to consumers with 2 to 10 milliseconds delay.

  • Line interactive UPS

This type of UPS is almost similar to offline UPS with the difference that their switching rate in near to zero.

UPS components

Like every other device, UPS consists of different parts with each one responsible for a certain task. These components are:

  • Inverter
  • Charger
  • Battery
  • Charging rectifier

Why UPS

While using electrical equipment, every change and problem in mains electricity results in damaging them in some ways. These changes are a reason to use UPS to protect the equipment which are as follows:

  • Sudden voltage drops
  • Sudden voltage spikes
  • Electric charge reduction
  • Power outage
  • Electrical noise
  • Changes in frequency

Importance of using UPS

Today, people’s life relies heavily on electricity in a way that power outages and power swings can cause serious software and hardware problems in electrical equipment. These problems can later lead to damage to life and property. Producing UPS has prevented these problems from happening to a large extent. For example, imagine while you are working on your computer, the power suddenly goes out and you lose all the information and files without saving them. But you could have had the chance to save them if you had an UPS in your house.

Phazify provides the best UPS managing system.
